Rock Lake Sea Serpent
Date in History:
This historic document aired on the radio as an Historic Minute on 06/19/2006.
Through the years, many folk stories have centered on Rock Lake in Lake Mills. Some concern pyramids at the bottom of the lake and others sound similar to the story of the famous Loch Ness monster.

In 1882, after being quiet for 15 years, the Rock Lake serpent apparently reared its head at two boaters as they raced across the lake. According to the newspaper account in the Lake Mills Spike, the two men thought they were seeing a log in the water just ahead of their boats. As they approached, the monster thrust its head three feet out of the water and opened its huge jaw before it dove under. The serpent was said to be "as long as the boat and the color of a pickerel."

Although other sightings have occurred over the years, the monster continues to be as elusive as the one in Loch Ness.
